Sarawak Young Designer (SayDesign) Furniture by the first group of Pool of Young Designers from Sarawak Featured in Dezeen’s Virtual Design Festival, Milan, Italy, 15th April – 30th June 2020. STIDC, in collaboration with Fakultas Seni Rupa dan Desain (FSRD) – Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Bandung, Indonesia had participated in Ventura Future 2020 in Milan, Italy, as part of STIDC continuous effort to promote Sarawak Young Designer (SayDesign) and the emerging young designers from Sarawak internationally. The Ventura Future is one of the event organised in conjunction with Salone del Mobile, the most prestigious furniture fair in the world. STIDC participation featuring the works of the emerging young designers from Sarawak aims to enrich the exposure and widen experiences at the same time to build networking and rapport with international designers and communities around the world. This participation was meant to portray the works of the first batch of six young designers who had graduated from an enhanced furniture training program organised by STIDC in collaboration with FSRD, ITB, Bandung in 2019. For this purpose, STIDC and ITB had initiated and introduced SayDesign as a platform that showcases designs by young creatives from Sarawak in Milan, Italy. SayDesign is exhibiting Venture, a collection of chairs and tables by the state’s emerging designers. Each piece of the furniture featured is handcrafted using materials locally sourced in Sarawak, and designed with a “unique character” that can be utilised in any space. Due to severe outbreak of Covid19, which affected Italy and rest of world, on 27th March 2020, the organiser, iSaloni had announced the suspension and eventually the cancellation of Furniture fair Salone del Mobile Milano 2020. The Ventura Future, which was supposed to take place from 16-21 June 2020 in Milan, was also cancelled because of this unforeseeable circumstances. As part of the continuous PR and communication program to create greater awareness on the young designers works from Sarawak internationally, STIDC and ITB took the opportunity to join the Virtual Design Festival (VDF) launched by Dezeen – online architecture and design magazine, the main media partner of Ventura Future, to gain well-deserved PR opportunity to present the products to the public. VDF is a new initiative that will bring the architecture and design world together to celebrate the culture and commerce of design industry, and explore how it can adapt and respond in these extraordinary circumstances. VDF is a platform for designers and brands to present their concept, products and projects to complement and support fairs that have had to be postponed. Virtual Design Festival is the world first online design festival, taking place from 15 April to 30 June 2020.
STIDC has collaborated with ITB, Bandung to develop an enhanced and customised one-year furniture training program for Pool of Young Designers from Sarawak aims to increase knowledge and skill in designing with international inputs and exposure through ITB linkages and networks. Since its commencement in 2018, the first batch had successfully completed the program in 2019 where five of them have been employed by the furniture company in Sarawak and one of them will join STIDC Incubator Program, STIDC’s initiative in collaboration with private sector in Sarawak. The second batch of nine young designers is now in ITB for their second year training program. The third batch of 6 young designers is now in their first year training undergoing Industrial Attachment with furniture companies in Sarawak. The Pool of Young Designers Training Program is a two-years training program for fresh graduates developed and implemented by STIDC in collaboration with UNIMAS. STIDC targets to train 100 fresh graduates as the emerging young designers, in line with the Corporation’s vision to transform the timber industry to a high value industry by 2030. Talent development among fresh graduates and the young entrepreneurs in design and creativity will become one of STIDC main agenda in the near future in meeting the international market requirements. With this in mind, STIDC plan to set up Sarawak Design Centre (SaraDeC) as a venue and a platform to develop potential talents in design. SaraDec will promote local products and brands produced by the local entrepreneurs and the SMEs through STIDC’s SayDesign. STIDC mission is to make SaraDeC a catalyst in grooming emerging young and professional designers to produce international brand from Sarawak. In the long run, SaraDeC will be able to turn Sarawak as one of the renowned design hub in ASEAN Region. This year, among initiatives to be undertaken by STIDC, as STIDC continuous effort to create conducive design environment and to promote Sarawak designs and in collaboration with international designers and design institutes, will be the organisation of Virtual Conference on Design, International Summer Design Camp, Build Community through Design Program, Talent to Business Design Program, Fresh From Sarawak Online Marketing Program, Design Recognition Program, Training and Knowledge Sharing Program, Exhibitions, etc.
