What is Prayer: Journeys through Artistic Practice by Dr. Ella Whateley
“What is Prayer: Journeys through Artistic Practice” showcases the works of Dr. Ella Whateley during her residence at the Visual Art Program of FSRD ITB as a visiting professor. Most of her works are inspired by the expression of in-betweenness in religious practices, as well as her experience observing worship rituals (prayer, dhikr, and tahlil) practiced by Muslims in Indonesia. This exhibition was opened on Tuesday, November 29th, 2022 at Soemardja Gallery, Bandung Institute of Technology. The exhibition took place from Nov 29th to Dec 16th, 2022.
Mrs. Ella’s experienced an incredible journey even from the time she arrived in Indonesia. She experienced the practice of worship and spiritual life in Indonesia. She participated in various spiritual activities ranging from Islam, Hinduism, etc. The works on display are her presentations on the worship of all religions and spiritual journeys while staying in Indonesia.
Zusfa Roihan, S.Sn., M.Sn., a lecturer from Visual Art Research Group said “We are glad that Dr. Ella Whateley can complete her mission and project in Visual Art Program FSRD ITB. She also spent her time as visiting professor for 3 months with some activities such as teaching and sharing with students, workshops, discussions, making works and exhibitions of works”.
