Students of the Interior Design program held a field study as part of Interior Design Studio V (DI4001) course on the design case study. The activity started with an observation of one of the abandoned areas in RW 08 Kampung Braga, Bandung on Wednesday, 14 September 2022.  The result of the course studies was presented in the Academic Exhibition on Friday, 23 December 2022. The activity was attended by students and lecturers and involved the residents of RW 08 Kampung Braga.

Kampung Braga was selected because it may reflect urban phenomena in Indonesia in general by having a “kampung”—also known as an urban village—in the middle of an urban area. During the initial hearing with the head of neighborhood units (RT/RW) of Kampung Braga, they are very open to the involvement of educational institutions. However, caution and sensitivity on how real information from residents is packaged are still needed to support the design process.

“The application of the Interior Design course in this field course by studying the real phenomena and daily occurrences in society is important for the basis of problems which will then be used as design problems. The results of interior design are still often associated with the needs of the upper middle class. Through the case study in Kampung Braga, students are challenged to be able to contribute knowledge of interior design to the general public”, said Dwi Hatmojo Danurdoro S.Ds., MT.

“Students and also lecturers are expected to transform the mindset that design in general and interior design, in particular, must be able to contribute to all levels of society in need. Through activities like this, educational institutions will be more sensitive to what the community needs.”, said Dwi Hatmojo Danurdono, S.Ds., MT.
